Where Do Pet Ferrets Come From?

As with many animals, people like to know where they come from, or what the background of a species is. The same goes for a ferret, where do ferrets come from? What is their background? Are they the ancestors of other species? The Mustela putorius furo, or ferret as we know them, are family to the Mustelidae, or weasels. However, the ferret is slightly different.

Ferrets are only domesticated animals, there are no wild species of them. That is a pretty challenging thing to think about really, as most animals have some wild version. However, the fact that they are domesticated makes it more difficult to understand where they came from, or who their ancestors are. The best bet for where ferrets come from is a combination of the Steppe polecat and the European polecat.
