Maine coons are beautiful cats, and the largest cat breed to be fully domesticated until the appearance of the Savannah in the mid-’80s. They are very distinct in features, and very obvious to spot, especially if you have owned one. But, where do Maine coons come from? As they are so old, there is no official record of the first Maine coonto appear, nor is there an official record of where it was. However, as the breed is native to the North American state of Maine, that is often thought of as the originating state.
As previously stated, there is no official “first” Maine coon on record, so there needs to be some speculation as to where they came from as a breed. The closest and most credible idea is that they are very closely related to the Siberian and Norwegian Forrest cats. However, in the early 20th century, the breed was threatenedby other long-haired breeds taken to America from overseas. Therefore, it is still quite difficult to understand exactly where they have come from.
