Guinea pigs often look different from each other. While there may be similarities, there are some that have significant differences. The is because there are thirteen different breeds of guinea pigs, and that is only the recognized ones. If you have two different breeds of those thirteen, and they have offspring, it is not likely to be a recognized breed. Therefore, there are certainly more than the number that people account for. That can make you ask, what breed of Guinea pig do I have?

There are certain things that are easy to look out for. For example, the length, texture, and markings of the fur are the easiest way to tell which breed you have. The easiest way to start is through fur length. Short-haired breeds are Abyssinian, Abyssinian Satin, American, American Satin, Teddy, Teddy Satin, and White-Crested. Long-haired breeds are Coronet, Peruvian, Peruvian Satin, Silkie, Silkie Satin, and Texel. Of course, these aren’t the only options you have for breeds, but they are certainly the best place to start. Long-haired are easy to spot, it is often difficult to see their legs if you can at all. As a reference, the featured image is a long-haired Silkie.
