History
The Belgian Tervuren was named for the Belgian village of Tervuren. It is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Sheepdogs, the Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Groenendael, Belgian Malinois, and the less popular Belgian Laekenois, which all share a common foundation. In most countries and breed clubs, all four dogs are considered the same breed with different varieties in coat types.
In addition to the Belgian Tervueren (long coat any color but black), the other Belgian sheepherding dogs include the Belgian sheepdog or groenendael (long black coat), the Belgian Malinois (short, smooth coat) and the Belgian Laekenois (wire coat). Of these, only the Laekenois is not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The American Kennel Club recognized the four Belgian breeds in 1912 as sheepdogs in the herding group. In 1959, they were recognized by their breeds, except the Laekenois. The first Tervuren was registered with the AKC in 1918.
The Belgian Tervuren has a significant number of natural abilities and talents, including search & rescue, sledding, tracking, obedience, agility, and detection.
Temperament

Coat
