History
The Armant is a medium-sized breed of Egyptian Sheepdog. This breed was initially developed in the historic town of Armant hence the name. Not much is known about the specific origin of this herding dog. As with any other ancient breeds, the Armant too has several theories regarding its history. It was believed that these dogs have existed in Egypt during the 15th century. It was speculated that the breed has descended from the Briards and other sheep herding dogs. It was also thought that the Armant have fallen from the dogs brought by Napoleon’s troops during his expedition to Egypt. As there were no shreds of evidence, these theories were not scientifically proven.
An Armant is a reliable and agile dog with steady movement. This fleet-footed breed can work tirelessly in the harshest terrain and under extreme weather conditions. Throughout the breed’s history, it has served man by being the fearless protectors of the livestock as well as the loyal and protective companion. The Armant is noted to have a fearless temperament. These dogs are also kept as family pets and companions. Present-day Armant though is now being bred and developed in France and Holland. This breed is noted to have played a significant role in the development of the Bearded Collie.

Appearance
The Armant or Egyptian Sheepdog is a medium-sized breed with a large head and small round dark coloured eyes. This breed of herding dog has strong and proportionate medium muzzle and a little black nose. The colour of the nose can complement the colour of the coat in some individuals. Since it is a working breed, it is expected to have a strong muscled body. The ears of this breed have no set standard as it can have a different type of ears that can be dropped or erect. Armant can be of multiple colours, the most common of which is black, black and tan, grey and grey-yellow variations. It has a broad, deep, muscular chest, and well-sprung ribs with a long shaggy coat that is rough to touch. Its forelegs are straight and strong with small and compact feet. Its hind legs are sturdy with hocks well bent. It has got thickly padded arched toes making it comfortably able to walk across rough terrain when herding or guarding. It has a long tail that may be curled or docked. The dog can carry its tail curled and also in an upright manner.

Grooming
The Armant or Egyptian sheepdog needs regular brushing of the coat to help out in the shedding process. Bathing of the dog is necessary too, and it is best if it gets regular baths to keep it clean.

The breed is susceptible to hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dissecans.
