Are Pet Rat Droppings Dangerous?

There are a lot of people who have a love of pet rats, and the number is growing every year. The problem is, while they may appear to be clean, they can still carry some diseases that you need to be aware of. Even a healthy rat can carry germs that can be detrimental to the health of certain people, and that is no secret. Of course, taking proper care of your pet rat and maintaining their habitat is crucial to the health of everyone in the house. However, are pet rat droppings dangerous?

The simple answer is yes, they certainly can be. There are various germs that rat droppings can contain, thus spread through the droppings, too. For example, Giardia, Hantavirus, Rat Bite Fever, and Salmonella can spread through the droppings of rats that have them. Therefore, it is crucial that you keep their cage as clean as possible, and take proper precautions while you do so. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control Prevention) advises that families with children under five years old, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems should not have rodents as pets, as they are at higher risk of complication.
