Do you want a pet Chinchilla? Do you already have a cat? Then you need to know if they will get along well, or if you are going to start a pet war. The biggest factor that you need to take into consideration is that cats are natural predators of rodents, and chinchillas are rodents. However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t get on well. What it does mean is that you probably need to introduce them to each other correctly. If you have the option to have a chinchilla for a short period on a trial-type basis, then you have more chance of correcting it should anything go wrong.
We have a dog and cats living with us, and they get on fine. In fact, they play together more than anything else. We put that down to two things: The personalities, and the way we introduced them. We already had a dog, and when we brought a cat home, we left it in the cat box for a while, so they could get used to each other’s scents, and sights, without being in danger, only for an hour or so though. After a while, we would keep them in separate rooms but both free to roam, so they knew they were still there. it didn’t take long for them to become accustomed to one another, and they are fine now. The only way to know for sure is to try.
