As cresties are one of the most common reptiles people keep as pets, it is interesting to know if crested geckos are smart, or not. The main train of thought with all reptiles is, they are primitive animals with very small brains. However, some reptiles such as the Komodo dragon are exceptionally smart, with real hunting abilities. Also, it is clear that not all reptiles are as unintelligent as you may think. That doesn’t answer the question of crested geckos though.
If you have ever owned a crested gecko, you will know that there is a lot of differences between them. There are some that show some levels of intelligence. However, on the other hand, some will show zero intelligence, by doing things such as trying to eat their substrate. Others will show some, by being able to recognize things such as the owner, when it is feeding time, only going to certain people, etc. In conclusion, there are some that will show they understand their surroundings more than others, but that doesn’t make them any less of a great pet.
