Turtles. you see them on almost every water wildlife program going, including sea documentaries. One of the most iconic images of a turtle is similar to the featured image of this post. That is of them swimming underwater. Furthermore, one of the most obvious traits of turtles is that they have no feet. Those two points together raise the question; can pet turtles drown? The reality is that, yes, turtles can drown if they have no easy access to air. But how common is that, and how do they actually drown?
Turtles do not have gills, they are not the same as fish. Therefore, they have no mechanism to breathe while underwater. However, they can hold their breath for a very long time, so long in fact that they do not need to surface for several hours. But, if you do not give your turtle easy access to the air, then they will certainly drown. One of the most important considerations is that you do not leave anything that can trap your turtle. That is because they can drown very quickly when they become scared.
